Ladies and gentlemen most of us dream of being successful, having a family and leaving a legacy behind when we die in order for us to feel that we have at least achieved something in this world. At some stage though, before we can escape this world your own flesh and blood child would look at you while you are busy with something and as you; "dad/mom, why does all smartphones look the same?" and at that very moment you would want to smack the child as you wish they would have instead asked you a simpler question such as "where do babies come from" or something similar. Hopefully this piece shall do its best in trying to solve that matter before it gets out of hand.

Once upon a time there was peace and every smartphone manufacture was minding their own business, this was in the early 2000's when Nokia was ruling the industry with different shapes and experimental designs of smartphones flooding the world. There was a Nokia phone phone made for everyone out there, Sony was also ahead of it's game with the Walkman(music focused) line and
Cybershot(camera focused) line. Samsung revolutionized the sliding phones and there was many phone designs to choose from. During these times Apple was known for the device that revolutionized the way people listened to music, this was the Ipod, introduced in 2001 and was for storing and playing digital music. The only was one one could listen to music on the go was by carrying a CD player (with different CDs or your favourite one) or a cassette player, which most 80's and early 90's kids would tell you how long it takes to wait for those to rewind . In a nutshell it is what a 2000's kid would call hell.
The year 2007 the first iPhone was announced by Steve Jobs at the Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference. Yet again another revolution by our fellow fruity company as they introduced a phone that shows only that which is useful to the user, meaning that they realized that the keyboard is only useful for when one is typing and is not needed for when viewing images for example. So as they were known for their innovation and respect for design they made a great phone with only one front button called the "home" button, click here to watch the video.
In 2011, Samsung released the second generation their Galaxy S phones, this was called the Galaxy S II . It was this phone that made Apple furious enough that they filed a lawsuit against Samsung for stealing their design. The following year(2012) Samsung made sure to stay away from that design when they released the predecessor called the Galaxy S III, this phone became an instant success as everyone who was viewed as successful had this phone in the hand. Samsung realized this and followed it with the Galaxy S4 (2013), yet again a beautiful phone which was more powerful than its Apple counterpart namely the iPhone 5 although the apple was more beautiful than the S4. The reason for this was that Samsung was using plastic painted to appear as metal for its phones while Apple used aluminium for their phones for a premium feel. So poor little Sammy thought that they had a solution as they came up with a stitched leather back for their Galaxy Note 3 which followed the S4 later that year. Everyone was disappointed as it still felt cheap as the metal was still plastic painted to appear as metal. HTC released the beautiful aesthetic HTC One (M7) that year and that is when Apple saw something useful about the design. Later that year Apple released the iPhone 5s, which would introduce fingerprint scanners to the smartphone industry.
2014 HTC released another HTC One (M8), it looked familiar to the (M7) but it was more powerful than the first one. Sammy yet again came forward with another plastic phone painted to look like metal, but they ditched the so called "fake" leather stitching everyone was frowning upon for a dimpled back which was ridiculed for looking like a band aid. The phone is called the Galaxy S5 and I do not want to lie, when I held that phone I felt that the back was smooth and it allowed for better grip at the phone as it was a little bigger than the S4 and therefore more slippery. So Sammy sadly went back to the drawing book, or rather borrowed Apple's book (although the phones are too different, there are slight similarities such as chamfered edges between this and the iPhone 5s) for a next phone design, this seemed to be an experiment with design and was called the Galaxy Alpha. There were positive reviews about this phone and Samsung decided to use the same design to the next Note called the Galaxy Note 4, along with it Samsung presented the Note Edge. Iphone on the other hand took inspiration from the HTC One, because they both have an aluminium unibody design the reception of network was slow and therefore the 2 band strips on the back of the phone was a solution for the design problem.
2015 Samsung took from Apple iPhone 6 although not the utilization of the bands but the metal chassis with the positioning of the speaker, round edges and the headphone jack for their Galaxy S6 phone. I feel that this specific design was targeted as stealing iPhone customers from Apple as there was even an app that was developed to help those who wish to switch from iOS to Samsung, not Android...SAMSUNG. The phone itself is beautiful I have to add, the back is made of the same hard to scratch/damage Gorilla Glass that is also used on the front side of the phone. Although the design is heavily praise, especially for the fact that i came from a Samsung phone, I still feel that they could have done much better if they decided to be original. Today almost all phones utilize the bands the way HTC does, but it seems as everything Apple copies it seen as an Apple original, these phones actually copied Apple not HTC as they all moved their speakers and headphone jacks on the bottom of the phone in addition to the bands. Maybe these manufacturers are rushing to put their phones in production for a piece of pie in those profits that they skip the designing process altogether, maybe they testing to see if Apple has the power to sue every phone company like they did with Samsung. Anyway the new iPhone called the iPhone 7 is rumoured to be without a headphone jack, Motorola's Moto Z used the opportunity to be first at this, lets wait and see everyone else follow. If the new iPhone comes with a new design, I wonder if the other companies will continue with "outdated designs" or they will remain using their rectangles as advertising space for the iPhone. I understand that the HTC realized that the best way to use a fingerprint sensor was to place in on the front, but I am disappointed that they too copy and use childish excuses like "well they did it first", they still could have given us the joy of a front facing speakers like they always did. I know there are limits on how one can design rectangle but this is too far, I mean c'mon just look at this:
We average consumers are going to let this slide, because we cannot afford them.... ... ...but when we do, when do we will come for you.
HOPE YOU ENJOYED...
